GANDHINAGAR: Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Saturday started his day offering prayers at the state’s famous Somnath temple.After the Somnath Temple visit, Rahul will fly to Ahmedabad to hold a meeting of party leaders and candidates who lost the elections.
Rahul had visited the Somnath Temple during the recent election campaign and his name was found written on the entry register meant for non-Hindus.He along with Congress General Secretary in-charge Ashok Gehlot and Gujarat Congress President Bharatsinh Solanki performed puja at the temple.
Sources said that the party chief, besides wanting to thank the lord for the victory, planned to give out a clear message to BJP that they were not the proprietors of Hindu votes.“Despite all this, BJP could not win even one out of four seats in Somnath.
Besides, Congress won 40% of its seats (30 out of 77) from Saurashtra-Kutch alone,” sources added. Sitting MLA of Somnath and BJP minister Jasha Barad lost the seat to Vimal Chudasama by more than 20,000 votes.
In Ahmedabad, Rahul Gandhi will meet party workers. Sources in Congress said, “Rahul Gandhi is very happy with the Gujarat results. He is now targeting 2019 elections as Congress has gained in more than five Loksabha seats in this Assembly election.
He will have review meeting with leaders and candidates of four zones—North Gujarat, South Gujarat, Saurashtra-Kutch and Central Gujarat. The Congress won 77 seats in 182-member Gujarat Assembly. The BJP won 99 seats to form next government in the state.
